Environmental Triggers in Australia

Curious what's actually behind your symptoms — and what you can do about it today? This page explains what Australia's main environmental triggers are and how to reduce your exposure at home. For exact monthly timing, see Your Seasonal Hay Fever Calendar.

Trigger Types Overview

🌾 Grass pollens
▼
Ryegrass and couch grass are Australia's two biggest grass-pollen triggers. Both spread pollen by wind, not by insects — which is exactly why you can't see or smell what's setting off your symptoms.
🌲 Tree & weed pollens
▼
Wind-pollinated trees like White Cypress Pine and She-Oak release large amounts of fine pollen. This is different from Australia's insect-pollinated native flowering trees, which rarely cause reactions despite being more visible.
🛏️ Dust mites
▼
Unlike pollen, dust mites aren't seasonal — they're a year-round, indoor concern. They thrive in humid conditions and feed on shed skin flakes.
🍄 Mould
▼
Mould grows in damp indoor spaces and tends to be more active over summer and autumn, but it's fundamentally an indoor humidity issue.

Myth or Fact?

"The bright yellow wattle you see flowering in spring is the main cause of hay fever."

Myth. Wattle relies mostly on insects and birds to spread its pollen. The real culprits are wind-pollinated grasses — pollen you usually can't even see.

"Eating local honey builds up immunity to local pollen."

Myth. Bees mostly visit bright, insect-pollinated flowers — not the wind-pollinated grasses and weeds behind most hay fever.

"Ionisers and ozone-generating air purifiers are a great choice for allergy sufferers."

Myth. Ozone is a mucosal irritant and can worsen airway inflammation. HEPA H13/H14 filtration is the better-evidenced choice.

"Dust mites are especially common in humid coastal homes."

Fact. They thrive on humidity, which is why controlling indoor moisture matters.
